How do you install a bucket tooth?

Installing a bucket tooth is a simple process and can usually be done in a few minutes. Most skid steer bucket teeth—such as Series 23 weld-on teeth with replaceable tips—use a pin-and-lock system or retainer. Here’s the typical installation process:


  1. Remove the old tooth

    Use a hammer or punch to drive out the retaining pin. Slide the worn tooth off the shank or adapter.

  2. Clean the adapter or tooth shank

    Remove dirt, rust, and debris to ensure a tight, secure fit for the new tooth.

  3. Position the new tooth

    Slide the replacement tooth onto the adapter, aligning the pin holes of both parts.

  4. Insert the retaining pin

    Push the pin through the aligned holes. Some teeth use a roll pin, while others use a pin-and-lock wedge.

  5. Secure the lock

    Tap the pin or lock in place with a hammer until it is fully seated. This prevents movement during digging.

  6. Check for a tight fit
